i am working towards becoming a gardener. i guess i am a gardener,
a novice one. but i am working & studying & learning & exploring
all horticultural avenues. i have been taking horticulture classes
at city college for 2 semesters now. love it. have been volunteering
at strbing arboretum for 9 months now!! i tell you - that would
be the most fabulous city gardener job ever.
COME ONE - COME ALL - GIANT STRYBING PLANT SALE FRIDAY AND SATURDAY
MAY 3 & 4!
today i worked with
my friend david and his gardener friend gary. gary is 61 and a
master gardener. i have workied in 3 of his yards so far - masterpieces. one yard was designed so that the lawn is central, an inviting place for a picinic,
while the plants are rocks run all along the periphery. he has so many different plants growing
with different coloried leaves and flowers that have fallen onto the green carpet so
that it looks like the grass is covered in confetti.
the one in berkeley today was originally designed by harland
hand. ruby and gary's dog mitzfa buddy up for the day and sample the variety of grasses.
ru gorged herself this morning and has been retching all day - poor girl.
working outdoors in this pleasant weather is a great reward. not too much stress to be found
amongst the trees and the rocks and the flowering shrubs.

ok. one last entry before the year ends. i have been anti-computer
for the last few months - ever since i quit my programming job
at frog
back in september! i am glad i got off that sinking ship. it is
still sinking - it has many leaks and too many clueless captains.
but, alas i did not join the ranks of the unemployed. i am now
working as an assistant gardener part time. and i am going to
school for horticulture. i really love school. taking 3 classes
at city college - all my teachers rock and there is so much new
information for me to absorb. working for the landscapers is kind
of hard in that i have to get up at quarter to six in the morning
in order to get to the yard by 7am to start my 10 hour work day.
once i'm there its all good. weeding, raking, planting, pruning,
etc. for the rich folks in san francisco. i am certainly jealous
of their beautiful yards. so, i will continue with the school/work
thing next semester. also. i hope to get at intership at the botanical
gardens in golden gate park - right now i volunteer there
on saturdays. what an amazing place!
what else? i went to mexico with lynn, mr & mrs garcia, elizabeth
and hillary - for 10 fabulous days. what a blast. whant to know
one of the scariest rides on this planet? driving in mexico city
- freaking maniacs! we have a friend, paulina, who lives there.
she and her family drove us ll around that amazing city and showed
us a good time. thank you! also, we spent 5 days on the most pristine
beach called zihuatanejo.
eating breakfast on the beach, laying under the palm palapas for
the rest of the day, swimming in beautiful warm water, hardly
anyone else around. one more corona please! paradise.
well, i will be back in boston for 2 weeks over christmas break.
i really miss my family and my east coast friends. have a happy holidya!

sorry to all of my friends who have had to hear me whine about
stress, overworking, boyfriend problems, landlord harrassment,
etc. and to all of you that have not heard from me lately because
"i've been so fucking busy". and i have, but mostly busy at work
and not busy with fun things. i must reprioritize my priorities.
but i think the insanity at work has stopped. lets hope this doesn't
mean i get laid off.
i am not in denial of this possibility anymore. but i dont want
to loose my job, my income. i actually have a plan in the works,
españa! must... save... money... but really, what would
i do if i got canned?
* freak
* sleep
* take the motorcycle class, take a spanish course, go to printmaking
again, find peace thru yoga, volunteer at the gg arboretum, clean
the back room
* find a job. attempt to find freelance work perhaps. if not,
cater. i will NOT temp. green apple books only pays $8/hr and
you have to pay union fees! ug. cant work at a clothing store
because i will just trade my check in for discounted goodies!
i'm screwed.

if you live in san francisco and ever say you're bored you should
be shot. saturday i saw the play the memorandum, a kind
of dark comedy. the story is about the introduction of an artifical
language that is supposed to allow for greater precision in communication.
the ridiculous attempt results in a complete breakdown of human
relationships. it was written in the 60's by vaclav
havel, the current president of the czech republic and a champion
of human rights. for those with an aversion to political discussions
(like me): the play does not feel political, is not attached to
a certain obscure (cause you don't know your history) period of
history and is not so dour to leave you with a feeling of hopelessness.
on the contrary, the setting is now, the unstable south park office
you work in; the dialog you have heard over lunch, you have even
supported in meetings on improving process and team efficiency!;
and the end result is you feel more powerful beacuse you have
been able to see this absurd satire brilliantly & concisely
performed for you. you can laugh at the confused characters on
stage and nod "yes, yes" i have seen that happen, see it happening,
and i will not apathetically adapt to new systems proposed by
bureaucrats just because "studies show" but will raise my voice
against the absurdness of it all.
"zarit fu quizzbot ilchyn mook. ga. " see
it.

my cousin pete's a rock
star!!!! check out the new and exciting music on richie
records. maybe ruby can join the band!
18 april 01
just came back from a very odd lunch in south park. not that the
location had changed or the tuna sandwich tasted any differently
but suddenly the warm sunny day turned gray and windy. cherry
blossom petals whirled and swirled thru the air while ruby shivered
under the little table. i felt displaced, so i tried pretending
i was at a sidewalk cafe in france (never been) but the gusts
of wind and the sweetly screetching vioin music was making me
melancholy and slightly uneasy. there is this new street performer
(with a mohawk/mullet combo) who has a violin hookeded up to an
amp; much more interesting than the normal guitar. and now they
are drilling holes into the concrete walls at work. i am totally
unnerved. it's only freaking wednesday!
06 april 01
it is raining and cold. perfect day for being sad. my company
laid off several people, my friends, this week. good thing i'm
underpaid. and then there are affairs of the heart. i swear, spring
is not the time of love's blossom but of heart breaking, of asserting
independence, of just making drastic changes cause something needs
to be destroyed in order for new things to emerge!?!?!? don't
come to me for answers.
i dream of faraway places. lands with no computers or stock markets
or reliance on giant energy machines. lands where all the food
is homemade, where people grow older and wiser, showing their
happiness thru big smiles and countless wrinkles, where nature
is the driving force of life, not something to be conquered and
sold. i have saved a letter from my friend mateo. we were all
in mexico together one year ago then he and lovely eva continued
on exploring central america. magical words describing the wonders
of belize.
28 march 01
what a great weekend! my east coast friends kat and kirk were
here for a whirlwind 3 days. partay! and my high school pal sandie
came down from seattle for her spring break. she is working on
her masters in architecture. it is so inspiring to see someone
so commited to her passion! and lastly my new friend paulina had
to go back to mexico city for her next college semester, she is
studying photography. i just know she'll miss the graveyard shift
at jack in the box! despite the lack of jobs and astronomical
prices of this city i think everyone here showed our visiting
friends reasons enough to move here and be with us permanently!
another fun thing i did this weekend is attend my newly formed
bookclub. 8 of us showed up to dicuss the book "house of sand
and fog". it sucked. we were wary of even meeting but we had a
good time trashing it. please do read this amalgamated
review of this highly acclaimed excuse for a novel.
13 march 01
my uncle just moved back to boston! i am so bummed. where am i
going to find a roommate who always takes out the trash, paints
ceilings, lends me his car and buys me weed? we miss you rick!
doesn't this crystal
palace just give you the shivers? i would love to be an ice
princess for a weekend. maybe have a grand dinner party and then
smash the room apart! i dont know about the ice bed though, i
get the flu just sitting on cold concrete.
25 jan 01
this state (well, the whole country) is going crazy. rolling blackouts
cause the power companies have no business sense at all. and i
just got my heating bill. gas doubled in price last month! fucking
hello?! no warning of this.
george W.
is such an asshole, 1st major act in office: banning all foreign
aid for family services! people are DYING because of lack of health
care, popultaion growth is a big problem, women WANT contraception
and can not get it, developing countries need education about
family planning and he just SHUT THEM OUT! you know, not ONE federal
dollar is spent on family planning within the US!? "the
government is not in the abortion business." but it IS
in the oil business, the ammunitions business and the religion
business????
do you ever watch letterman? did you see what bush did back in
october when they were on commercial break and he thought no one
was watching him? a woman was leaning over next to him and he
used the back of her sweater to clean his glasses! no one noticed
- except the camera you idiot! what are we to you, napkins!?

this is the fierce ruby monster atop a wild florida alligator.
for more photos of ruby's worldwide travel photos click on the
'gator. ruby tells me she would like a mini courduroy lay-z-boy
for christmas.
14 nov 00
we have a streaming live web cam at my office and i didnt even
know about it. i could give you all the url but unless someone
is purposefully there doing carwheels or throwing ruby up and
down it just looks like a cluttered office space.
i just finished a HUGE project at work so this week is dedicated
to fun time. i just made a little flash movie. ooooooooh.
08 nov 00
why wont that guy just leave ruby alone! this dude at work always
harasses her and ruby also must sense that i think he's a weirdo
cause she always barks at him when he comes around. just give
it up, she does not like you!
anyways, whats up with the election? are we living in denial
that bush has been chosen by the people? (or that "collage" of
people that somehow have the power to choose for us. thanks.)
well, get your frustration out by warping
the men.

hi dee ho. this is rubysuz.com's first posting. i cant call it
an edition because i dont even have a game plan for the site yet.
i'd like to have a few very different sections. one section will
be technical resources: examples of cool code, links to developers
sites, etc. for starters, check out my list
o' links.
i suppose ill have a cheezy section of photos, you know, trips,
family shots, drunken moments.
there will be space dedicated to friends work. i have many artist
friends who i envy and would love to show their work on this site.
somehow i will put together a visually stunning section - the
glam bam thank you mam - section showcasing my design skills and
html/javscript wizardry.
but for now i am only going to show you my javascript scrabble.
its been a great project to keep me on the javascript track.
so now anyone can write to me at suzanne@rubysuz.com
if anyone so desires.
